Ilabekken is quite a steep hike, taking you up high, providing a great view of the city. The walk starts in Ilsvika and takes you through Iladalen, a historic area that is now a green haven in the middle of the city, surrounded by a lovely park. Ilabekken has a long history, going back as far as the 12th century. Early on, it was the city’s main water source, until it became a flooding nightmare, creating a lot of trouble for the city’s inhabitants. Now, it is a popular area for walks. The stream was led underground in pipes for a long time, and was not brought above ground again until 2010, when this area was refurbished.
This walk starts out in Ilsvika, and you follow Ilabekken up approx. 700 metres. From there, you can continue up to Sverresborg Folk Museum, or maybe venture into the woods in Bymarka. If you don’t feel like walking all the way back down again, you can take several busses or the tram. Check bus and tram times here.
